На 29 октомври посланик Лъчезар Петков даде прием в посолството на Р България във Вашингтон по повод посещението на министъра на отбраната Николай Младенов. От американска страна събитието беше уважено от представители на редица държавни институции, вкл. Държавния департамент, Департамента по отбраната, Департамента по вътрешната сигурност, и др.
Посланик Петков отправи приветствие към гостите. В обръщението си министър Младенов подчерта, че новото българско правителство се стреми към укрепване на българо-американските отношения не само във военната сфера. Сред основните си задачи като министър на отбраната г-н Младенов посочи запазването на българския принос към мисията на НАТО в Афганистан.

Ambassador Petkov hosted a reception on the 29th of October at the Embassy in Washington, D.C., in honor of the Bulgarian Minister of Defense, Mr. Nickolay Mladenov who is currently on a visit to the United States. Numerous representatives of the US institutions, such as the Department of State, the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security and members of the Diplomatic Corps, attended the event.
In his welcoming speech Ambassador Petkov said that such a high-level Bulgarian visit in the United States is a proof of the excellent bilateral relations. Minister Mladenov emphasized that the new Bulgarian Government is aiming at strengthening Bulgarian-American relations in all areas, including the military. Minister Mladenov outlined his major goals as the new Defense Minister among which maintaining the Bulgarian commitment to the NATO mission in Afghanistan.
